Some security men reportedly sustained injures during the inferno which started at about 3:00 am. The incident which destroyed goods with hundreds of million naira comes few days after another fire razed Onitsha Car Paints market.
An eyewitness account claims that the fire may have started from one of the lock-up shops, but thàt men of the fire service were quickly alerted
President General of the market, Mr. Izuchukwu Okoye expressed shock, saying the fire service equipment in the market and brazen fire fighters helpet to put out the inferno would have spread to the entire market.
The Onitsha Police Area Commander, Mr. Philip Ezekiel, was also said to have romptly sent his men to the scene, led by the Okpoko Divisional Police Officer (DPO).
