Military action seems imminent in the troubled oil and gas wealthy but impoverished Niger Delta region, as the Military hierarchy embarks on enlightenment campaigns ahead of intensive Army invasion against strong militants’ bombardment of oil and gas installations and economic mainstay of Nigeria in the Niger Delta region.

The move, according to Blank NEWS Online findings, revealed that the aggravated Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) has vowed to declare its Niger Delta Republic, a means to secede from the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which the present Mohammadu Bihari led administration has sworn to defend.

The plans by the NDA strongly indicates that the Military may have been challenged for a show of strength on who owns and controls the bulk of the nation’s revenue generating base.

While receiving the General Officer Commanding (G.O.C.) 2nd Division of the Nigerian Army, Ibadan, Major-General Kasimu Abdulkarim who paid him a courtesy visit on Thursday (18/08/16) at Government House, Asaba, Delta State Governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa urged the military to carry out effective enlightenment campaigns to prepare the civilian populace for their actions in the region.

Governor Okowa commended the Military for informing the state about their intention to carry out some exercises in the creeks, observing that such would ensure reduction in unnecessary tension as the people would know that the actions were not targeted at the civilian population.

According to the Governor, “heavy presence of military men, always send shivers into the people and make them to be cocooned in their houses and it will make them not to go to farms, market or carry out socio-economic activities, but, when they are appropriately informed that your activities will not affect their normal lives, they will be receptive and go about their duties without fear.

“I am happy that the public is being informed about the operation you intend to carry out, the people will be calm and cooperate with you when they know that your actions will not be harmful to them,” he said, adding, “this prior information will make them realize that the operation is not going to affect the civilian population.”

Earlier, Major-General Abdulkarim had told the governor that he was on tour of states under the control of 2 Division of the Nigerian Army which includes Delta, Edo, Oyo, Ekiti and parts of Niger States, claiming that the “Nigerian Army is to have a training exercise which is amphibious in nature within the state.”

“We are here to provide adequate security and make the environment safe for all,” the G.O.C., however assured.

Also recall that in view of the prevailing security challenges in Delta state and the Niger Delta region, the Commandant, 4th Battalion of the Nigerian Army, Brig.-General Raji recently paid a courtesy call on Governor Okowa, to ascertain the extent of activities of militants, pipeline vandals and kidnappers in the oil and gas rich region.
